Francisco Cruz’s doctoral thesis defence (held in November) was unanimously approved by the jury with "very good”. The doctoral thesis was entitled "Towards autonomic workload aware NoSQL databases”.
The thesis addressed a new approach towards NoSQL databases, that is, non-relational databases, by highlighting some possible solutions to the problem of system scalability and performance optimization.
As final conclusions, Francisco Cruz presents four solutions to such problem, more specifically, the automatic and heterogeneous reconfiguration of NoSQL databases, the creation of a new mechanism of data partitioning that autonomously estimates the ideal split point based on the requests, the creation of a mechanism to accurately predict resource usage by this type of databases, and, finally, the design and implementation of a new system of load balancing that maximizes resource usage across the cluster.
For Francisco Cruz, the conclusion of his doctorate "would have not been possible without the support and contribution of the HASLab team and, more specifically, the researchers in the area of Distributed Systems".
