The article entitled "A survey and classification of deduplication storage systems" written by João Paulo and José Pereira, researchers at HASLab, was accepted for publication in the international journal ACM Computing Surveys, a journal with the highest impact in the field of Computer Science.
With an exponential growth of digital information everywhere, it is required the creation of mechanisms that aggregate all this information. The article presents a review and a new classification of the different systems of storage of digital information that currently support deduplication. This technique allows the elimination of duplicated data automatically and efficiently.
Through this technique, it is possible to reduce the amount of space needed to store large amounts of data, eliminating all redundant data and, therefore, reduce the cost of the infrastructures that store them.
Currently, deduplication is applied in several storage environments as, for example, the services of cloud computing. In these infrastructures it is possible to save up to 80% of the space used.
