The European project LeanBigData comes to an end with excellent evaluation

The European project LeanBigData (Ultra-Scalable and Ultra-Efficient Integrated and Visual Big Data Analytics), where INESC TEC was one of the partners, represented by the High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) and the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics  (CSIG), was concluded last month with an excellent evaluation from the European Commission, which stated that the consortium has developed very good scientific work with excellent results. The final evaluation took place in March in Madrid, Spain.

"Do it faster with fewer resources" – this is the motto of the project that seeks solutions for processing Big Data analytically, combining the capabilities of both operational and analytical data. In order to fight the existing disadvantages of each type of data, the LeanBigData faces three challenges, in particular, the costs associated with the migration of operational data for analytical processing, the lack of integration of existing technologies to handle large volumes of data and their high response times, and insufficient support provided by the end user. Among other objectives, the LeanBigData tries to fight these extremely long analysis cycles.

The project can be applied in four different areas, including aligning financial direct debits, detecting direct debit fraud in a timely and efficient manner, monitoring cloud data centres, monitoring and correlating the performance and the prediction of failures, targeted advertisement, maximising impacts and outcomes in real time and, finally, social network analytics. This project had global funding of around € 4M.
